In 1691, Spanish explorers happened upon a Native American settlement along the San Antonio river valley. In honor of St. Anthony, the explorers called the place San Antonio.  San Antonio grew to become the largest Spanish settlement in Texas.  The first settlement and mission was the San Antonio de Valero mission, or as it later became known: The Alamo.  Many consider the Battle of The Alamo as the tipping point in the fight for Texas' independence from Mexico.  The Alamo is the most popular tourist site in Texas.

Rich in culture and history, there are so many great things to see and do in San Antonio.
